‘Lay down’ he told me,  ‘rest & recover’.

It was better than the most comfortable bed I’ve ever been in.  I felt so safe, secure, and warm.  Nothing hurt every contact of my skin to his felt nourished.  I was healing.

‘Sleep my precious child’ he said and I did.

His thumb rested over me like a security blanket, keeping my body temperature perfect.

I awoke & my thoughts began to race…

‘No my child stop, this was just an accident.  You are okay.  Your body knows how to heal, calm your mind, sleep.’

And I did, better than ever before.

I awoke and checked my baby.  I whispered a prayer for my little sister who is in labour tonight/ now!  I tried to go back to sleep….

3:09am – is this the moment he is being born? Or is he already?

    First pic of my nephew

I can’t sleep, who am I kidding.  This is an exciting night! ‘The night my nephew is born’, sounds like a blog post title.  I haven’t written for a while, GET UP, what an occasion.  Write!

I think I might paint my nails too! I often do that in the middle of the night when I can’t sleep.

Yesterday we had a pamper day for the parents to be:  We (and by we, I mean my hubby) cooked a lovely breakfast.  My other sister bought her coffee machine & was barrister.  Super girl was chief babysitter of the 2 littlies.  I gave both the parents to be pedicures.  What kind of man lets his sister in law give him a Pedi, you ask? A bloody good one: open minded & smart.  (Who’d knock one back!)  Maybe I bought on the labour, I wonder!  I gave her a good little foot massage!  LOL – we joked about it bringing it on. (Due date was 12/8/17).  This was their equivalent to a baby shower.  No gifts, just time together, experience & a little pampering.

We had a guessing the date & weight game.  No one guessed that very day/ night!

I make a cup of tea ‘Sleep tight’ it’s called, a herbal mix.  Yeah right, I think, I doubt I’ll get any more tonight.  I’m too excited.

I said to my little sister the other day how I couldn’t believe, she & I have kids the same age.  She is 7 ½ years younger than me.  Her eldest is 2, my youngest is 3.  I wouldn’t have picked us having kids so close.  I’m glad we did, they are good play mates.

My eldest is almost 14.  My middle sister’s eldest is 14 already, they are 5 months apart.  We were pregnant together.  My niece, her daughter is 11 and we get on well.  We like a lot of the same stuff.  The 3 of them are very close.

Mum & Dad are away for the night in Sydney.  They’ll be itching to get back tomorrow.  We’ll all be up at the hospital to meet our newest family member.

Thank God we live in a country with such good maternity care.  Please keep my sister & nephew safe as he enters this world.  And thank you for my family.

For six weeks I was clean.

I believed I had beaten it.  I felt good, confident, and proud.

But someone had a Paris Breast at work.

I went to some training & food was a constant.

I splurged on a coffee, then another & another.  Because I wanted to!

How effortlessly I fell into old habits.  Emotionally feeding myself.

I ate less fruit.  It’s harder to fit it in when you’re filling up on other crap.

Yesterday I ate two lines of chocolate.  One was stolen.  I didn’t care.  ‘Fuck that healthy eating shit’ I thought.  ‘I deserve this’.

The guilt has returned.  It’s a constant Woe.

My mood is worse.  Anger is more present.  I think I’m turning into a Witch!  I’m mean to those I love the most.  And my evil Woe is grinning  at me.

The challenge is not to beat myself up, to be kinder, and give myself a hand up, a gentle nudge forward.

My intention, set with the new moon is fading on the white board.

My persistence has strength like a Lions roar….”

Maybe it’s a Lion’s cub or a ginger kitten, but it is still there.

My mind wanders to others battling addictions: Gambling, Alcohol, Drugs, Sex, Porn, food…

I believe I have a glimpse of their rough and awful road.

“I get knocked down, but I get up again” is playing in my head.

It took me over 40 years to do this!  I was in contemplation mode last year.  And guess what..it was okay!  I made it through with no chocolate at all.  I did sniff a bit though, it smells so good!

I like online challenges.  I’ve done a few: A photo a day: My favourite being two local challenges, #magicofthemanning &  #mindonthemanning.  I’ve also taken part in a drawing challenge, a daily blogging month, a sustainable home challenge and a Tame your temper one.  (yes I have a temper – don’t you?)

The one that’s had the biggest impact, is the one I’m doing right now.  It’s called Cleanse & Connect & because I’m an Earth Warrior I was drawn to it.  An amazing local girl, Kirsty Hughes – www.kirstyhughes.com, has designed it.  (this is my 3rd challenge with her.)  It’s a 28 day challenge and it does have a cost, but it’s affordable!  Together, we have been cleansing our bodies & our minds.  She sends out daily emails & has an online portal where we access weekly videos and information.  There is a resource page with excellent short meditations that connect you with the earth & all energy in life.  She gives great suggestions on things we can do daily to bring about peace of mind & take care of ourselves, so we can in turn take care of our planet.  I’m in week 4 right now.  I have not had any of the following for the past 3 weeks:

    • Caffeine
    • Alcohol
    • Dairy
    • Gluten/ bread/ wheat etc
    • Processed Sugar

Can you believe that?  I can’t!  I feel good and proud of myself.  I’m not intolerant to any of the above, lucky for me but I’m enjoying eating a more natural diet.  Like the Paleo diet idea.

With the last new moon we set an individual intention: mine is “I have an abundance of kindness for myself & it feels like a Springbok pronking”.  I have been repeating it to myself daily, it makes me smile.  It also makes me think of all the things I can do to be kind to myself & can put a stop to negativity.  Being kind to myself has many levels:  being more selective of what food I allow into my body, listening to my intuition, taking time to meditate.  We did a full moon ceremony to symbolise letting go of things that no longer serve us.

Many years ago I heard a great quote:  “Healthy people eat to fuel their bodies, not their emotions” I don’t know who said it, but I’ve want to be one of those healthy people.  However I’ve been an emotional eater, looking to food for comfort.  I can’t even narrow it down – I love all food sweet, savoury,  anything & everything.

I feel like I have broken this habit.  Now I am looking for yummy alternatives to enjoy & I have found some simple nutritious recipes.  I’m enjoying all the healthy things & what they are doing for my body, I particularly enjoy not feeling any guilt about what I’m eating.

Challenges are great: they make you think beyond yourself and give you a different focus, I believe it improves mental health too.  Something as simple as taking a photo a day gives me something to ponder on – (how will I portray that topic) similar with writing and drawing.  And Cleanse & connect has definitely been very beneficial to me.

Have you taken part in any cool challenges online?

    Weekends sometimes suck.

All week we are busy rushing around, doing what we do…

We look forward to the weekend when we can just RELAX!

    The week flies

    Saturday rolls around….

It’s not always all it’s cracked up to be.

    Sometimes families don’t get on.

    Annoy each other.

They want to spend quality time together & do something nice.

But can’t agree on what to do!?

Planning ahead would have been wise.

There are too many jobs to do around the house, yard, car, animals, washing, cleaning etc.  But you don’t want to spend all weekend doing that.

Sometimes it’s not that easy to relax.

    Sunday arrives

Finally getting into the groove of the weekend.

    Beginning to unwind.

By Sunday afternoon you’re on a roll, happy, relaxed.

The most productive time of the weekend after 4pm Sunday.

If only the weekend included another day… but it’s over.

    Mondayitis arrives.

    5 full days to go.

Cheers to the Freakin Weekend – I’ll drink to that!

    “I’m on strike”

I announced my strike from cooking on 2nd February & wrote it on my meal planning board!  “I’m not angry at anyone, I’m just tired” I explained.  No one argued.  No one seemed surprised actually.

    Today, 19th February – I still haven’t cooked dinner!

    Week 1

You know I have a Supergirl living at my house.  It’s not surprising really that she stepped up.  She took on the challenge of cooking for the entire week.  Her idea!  She planned every meal.  I bought her whatever she needed – I was happy to!  It was wonderful!  WONDERFUL!

I was willing to return to work after that week.  I negotiated my demands with the family. Everyone (over 3) is to cook 2 meals per week & this includes deciding what you will make.  (I must explain, I’m coming from a place of not cooking every night anyway, my family cook a fair bit already.

But – I STILL WANT MORE!)

    Week 2

    A funny thing happened:

Each night I just didn’t cook.  Mr Meg made a few meals over the weekend, I was out a night at Yoga another night SO He cooked again and Super girl continued to step up.   It helped that I went away for some work training for 2 nights.  (and ate amazing food at restaurants!)

I got home on Friday at 5:30pm.  No one was home.  They returned half hour later with Indian takeaway & the shopping!  Halleluiah!  (My next strike may be from shopping!)

Last night Mr Meg & I had a night to ourselves & had some take out.  The girls were at sleepovers!

Today I have been 20 days cook free!  It feels bloody good!

I wonder how long I can keep this going?!!!

Ps. It started after I read a book called “The woman who went to bed for a year” just a fictional novel but gave me this damn good idea.  And I think my family has benefited from it.  Especially MWA!

Pss. “The world keeps turning when women do less “ Megan Goodsell

{you may quote me on that one!)

Christmas is an interesting time.  A time of expectations.   Unfortunately often a time of overspending, over-eating & indulging occurs and huge waste is created.

I don’t want to forget that.  Last year we had a Buy nothing new theme. This year there was a mixture of bargain hunting & recycling.  Here’s some of how we did Christmas this year.

    1. We gave my daughter a little tykes Car for her main gift. I got it for free from an awesome local recycle/ free/ swap page I’m a part of.  I cleaned it up & hubby fixed the broken steering wheel.  She loved it!

      FREEBIE!!
    2. We fixed & repainted a little wooden table, that’s been sitting broken in the garage for ages.
    3. I received a 4th hand IPhone 4 from Supergirl who upgraded.
    4. My parents gave our toddler a brand new Fly Swat! Cheap, genius gift I thought! Ha ha
    5. My youngest sister’s 1 year old was given an awesome 2nd hand Thomas the Tank Engine, train set as his main gift, it came with about 6 trains, heaps of tracks, bridges etc. Recycled from their lovely neighbour.
    6. On the 23rd Dec I Op shopped & found:
      1. Half a dozen great quality t shirts for my husband.
      2. A 2nd hand Breville bread maker that looks like it’s never been Used!
      3. A hand painted bird feeder house for my Mum’s garden
      4. Brand new Paris coasters (in the packet)
      5. Tin candle holders that can hang in the garden or on the back deck.  (nothing like last minute finds!)
    7. My brother in law gave me 2 native shrubs for the garden, Scaevola Aemula or common named Mauve Cluster, which will attract butterflies, one he’d propagated himself.
    8. Some stocking stuffers for the girls came from Op shops.
    9. Super girl got a 2nd hand laptop that my husband had refurbished from his work place – (would’ve been a throw out.)
    10. My other sister gave a homemade hamper; which consisted of the most divine peanut/ cashew butter, chocolate balls, capsicum & tomato passatta, semi sundried tomatoes, capsicum & cashew dip, vege stock & homus – all home-made.
    11. My Mum gave me some hand knitted cushion covers for the lounge – Check them out!
    12. Super girl found a 2nd hand Mandala phone cover for her Aunty – it cost 50c & she loved it!
    13. One of my sisters always wraps gifts in junk mail catalogues. Unique!
    14. Super girl did a wonderful painting for me on a recycled canvas – My favourite gift.
    15. I’m re-using old cards for price tags in my new shop (which I will writing my next post about)
    16. And of course – my old favourite, keeping some wrapping that can be re-used next year.(If not too ripped.)
    17. For lunch, we all took a plate, it’s fair to say, my Mum did more that her share but, altogether it was a wonderful lunch & enough for dinner also.

In the past I’ve been guilty of overspending & indulging.  This year I am not.   I had a really lovely relaxing day with my family and there was not too much stuff to find places for.  Xx

    Ps: Ideas for next year

A batch of home-made play dough

More hampers of home-made goodies and gift certificates for home made meals.

Over the long weekend I read Constance Hall’s first book “Like a Queen”.  I was on board with her message already!

Support other women.  Treat others & yourself, like a Queen!

I’ve never understood why so many girls/women are nasty to each other.  We are all the same; we all struggle with the ups & downs of being female.  It really is quite simple to me, support each other & make life easier, not harder!

This book celebrates our differences without judgement & encourages us to share the journey with acceptance & love.  Constance encourages you to be proud of who you are, as a woman & as a Mum.  We are all doing the best we can & want the best for our kids.

I loved her views on housework; it’s changing the way I feel.  I’m now going to take more pride in my messy house; because I have other better things to do that spend all day cleaning.  I’m lowering housework on my list of priorities.  I will try harder not to let mess bother me as much.

I love the idea of doing kind things for other Queens.  I know so many women who already do this:

    • A meal for a new Mum – so much better than a toy or clothes for the baby.
    • Home picked flowers for a friend who’s feeling low, or on the fence for your neighbour
    • Folding a friends washing, doing her dishes – every little bit of housework helps!
    • Putting the toys away for your Day care Mum when you pick up your kid.
    • Stick a letter or card in the mail to a friend.

I do stuff like this already, but this book gave me even more inspiration.  Constance Hall suggests we do kind things & use the #queensunite hashtag.  It could be our calling card as Queens across the world support each other.

Today, I dropped off some lemons from our tree, to a massage therapist I know.  {I remembered her saying she always needs lemons for her work.}  I stuck some flowers in the container too.  This Queen is making other Queens feel better in her work.  It was a simple gesture I could do.

For lunch I ate hot chips at the park with my 2 most precious Queens, my daughters, we left the house messy!

Yesterday I stuck some Ice creams in one of my best Queens freezer – just because!

I am going to act on the thoughts I get more often, the ideas that come to me of things I could do for other women.  It doesn’t have to be complicated or time consuming either.  Isn’t it nicer to focus on making others lives happier, than dwelling on our own troubles.

There are a lot of interesting topics covered in this book, she has great views on bullying, child birth, parenting, relationships, self-care, sex, poo & it’s funny too .  She shares a lot about her personal journey.  I liked her down to earth, realistic style of writing; it’s a bit like having a conversation with a friend.  A friend who doesn’t try to make out she has all her shit together, but who sits with you & mulls over reality & the challenges we are all facing.

I won’t say any more as my book is on its way to one of my closest Queen friends.  I think she’s going to enjoy it.
