5 minute wonder

“Is there anything for desert Mum?” says Supergirl one night (Every night)
“Um… I don’t know.. Fruit?”  We both glance at the fruit bowl, apples, oranges & a few bananas.
“I don’t feel like fruit” she says with a frown.
“Hmmm me either..” I admit.
We lock eyes, eyebrows raise simultaneously.
“Are you thinking what I’m thinking?” she says with a cheeky grin.
“Yes” I reply, “Do it!”
She smile and starts to move around the kitchen, I smile knowing what’s in store.
She gets out a coffee mug. Expertly she adds 4 Tablespoons of flour & sugar (yes of each) and 2 Tablespoons of cocoa.
She mixes the dry ingredients, it takes all of 10 seconds.
She grabs an eggs & cracks it with ease , dropping it into the Mug. She’s been cracking eggs since she was 2. She adds 3 Tablespoons of oil & 3 of milk & mixes it all together. Another 20 seconds tops.
“The most important step” she says & turns around with the mug, her back facing me. The recipe says 3 Tablespoons of chocolate chips, but she puts in more, I never know exactly how much.
She pops it in the Microwave for 1 ½ – 2 minutes. That’s all.
She sits it on the counter & hot steam comes off, we stare at it, willing it to cool enough to shove in our mouths.
“I’d be good if we had ice cream” she remarks
“True” I agree
Then we both dig in, spoon in hand to the same Mug.
“mmmm this is a good one” I say. “you really are the Mug Cake Queen”. Go get your Supergirl cape & run around the house, I demand.
“Mum! She rolls her eyes. “I will after the cake”

Mr Meg walks in, looks at the Mug & then looks like he’s about to cry. “Where’s mine?” he says looking desperately at Super Girl.

  1. I really enjoyed reading this! I could just imagine the scene. We are about to make the mug cake, but it probably won’t be as good as Supergirl’s.

  2. I love that you’ve told a story about your family with this recipe! I’m rubbish with cakes so perhaps this quick and easy microwave cake would be a safer option for me x

  3. What’s up with you and Sophie today, or is it just me in a happy place? but both your recipe tales gave me a giggle.

I flipping love mug cakes, they are perfect portions to satisfy that sweet aching for something sweet and naughty without too much over indulgence.
